Keeping Your Computer Safe From Hackers
Use Multiple Passwords
Keeping information safe on your computer requires secure passwords that include a number, capital letter, symbol and the length of 8 characters or longer (i.e. eXamp1e!).
However, having one secure password isn’t enough. If a site is breached by a hacker your password can be easily accessible for them. That’s why it’s important to have a unique password for every site to protect your information.
Ready to Install
As tedious as it can be, when your computer or phone notifies you that it’s ready for an update it’s best to update as quickly as possible. Often times those updates include security patches and bug fixes that will keep your devices safe from threats. The longer you go without updating, the more at risk your devices become.
Social Media Don’t’s
Social media is all about sharing. There is however such a thing as oversharing. Giving friends and family updates can be great. However constantly updating your location, posting personal information like your address or allowing random programs access to your information can give strangers access to your personal info. Be smart about what you share.
To fully protect your computer make sure you have anti-virus software installed on your device like Malwarebytes. These types of programs are often free. The software scans your computer and disposes of viruses, malware, ransomware and more. Internet and cable providers often have services or recommendations for what software to use.
